Politicians to Be Prosecuted in Home County, Not Travis County

Public corruption complaints will now be directed to a white-collar crimes division of the Texas Rangers. Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill last week that removes the decision to prosecute from the District Attorney’s office in Travis County.

Detractors from the bill make the point that elected officials may now have a “hometown advantage.” Writers of the bill say hometown prosecutors and juries could deal more harshly with violators than officials in the capitol.
